Adopt a Family for Christmas

Several years ago Insight staff adopted their first families through the HELP!Line Center's Holiday Clearing House. Each year since, we've continued this tradition -- buying gifts and necessities for families in our community who would not otherwise have a Merry Christmas.

Last Wednesday we took time to go shopping for our families. It was fun to buy the  baby dolls, blocks, trucks and cars. But we also bought basic necessities, such as coats, mittens and boots for the children, along with blankets, clothing, laundry detergent and grocery staples.

Thanks to the generosity of Insight staff, we were able to make a difference for two Sioux Falls families. But many more families still need to be adopted. There's still time. Call the HELP!Line Center at 211. It's the best Christmas present you can give yourself.

Parade of Lights

After waiting in storage for a whole year, Insight's Little Red Stocking campaign window became a Parade of Lights float for this year's parade.

This year's project didn't take nearly as long as last year, but we did have to re-think the entire display. It's one thing to figure out how to make 8' pieces of cardboard stand in an enclosed window...quite a different thing to figure out how to keep them from being blown over on a moving trailer.

There were some great floats out there and we were just thankful we made it through the entire parade without a problem.  We tip our hats to the other float builders with whom we now share a common bond of float construction and all its labors.

For me it was my first time a.) attending the Parade of Lights and b.) building a float. I was amazed by not only the number and scale of the entries but also by the awesome creative and engineering thought that went into them. I may have found a new calling. Who needs a float built next year? I'm ready to begin construction.

It was also the largest crowd that I have ever seen in Sioux Falls. People filling the sidewalks, looking from the tops of parking garages, and from the 6th floor balcony at the Holiday Inn. I definitely plan on attending next year.

Retreat to the Hills

Take eleven co-workers, transport them clear across the state, and deposit them in a sprawling house for four days. Add a couple of hours of discussions, followed by lots of playtime in the beautiful Black Hills.

That was the premise for Insight’s retreat last weekend. Our first retreat, held in the same location two years ago, produced many tangible changes in our office – from hiring additional support staff to installing a smoothie machine in the break room. This retreat, however, focused less on structured meetings and more on structured fun.

Meeting

After discussions on Friday morning, we all piled in the cars and headed for the (Southern) hills. Everyone, even the claustrophobics in the group, enjoyed exploring Rushmore Cave and a quick stop at Lake Pactola. Back at the house, we grilled out and played.

Lake

We were back in meetings on Saturday morning. But instead of Doug and Candy leading the discussion, several team members talked about trends in our industry. And then it was time to play again. Four of us were invited to the top of Crazy Horse Monument – a rare treat. The rest of us, along with tour guides Bill and Tam Colson from Children’s Home Society, hiked around Horse Thief Lake.

We finished the evening in Deadwood with dinner, drinks, a little karaoke and a little dancing.  And Sunday morning we packed up the cars and, with the 50 mph tail wind, nearly flew back to Sioux Falls.

We had great fun, got to see our co-workers in a new light, and even found time for some serious discussions about the future of our agency. Was it a successful retreat? Absolutely.

Downtown Events

Heads up!

This Saturday be sure not to miss the Sidewalk Art Festival.

Word on the street:

"Yeah, they have stuff out along the sidewalk downtown from 14th street to 9th street. Tons of people checking out art...way cool."
 - Doug

"what?"
 - Brandon

From SiouxFallsEvents.com
"It's the largest one-day outdoor festival in the region with more than 250 fine art, folk art, craft and food booths. Proceeds support the Washington Pavilion's Visual Arts Center. Visit the Children's Garden Studio, where kids can make and take art projects. Tickets for these activities are $2 each or $10 for all. Admission to the Kirby Science Discovery Center is also free for the day! Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please check in at the box office for admission stickers."

The shindig starts at 9am and after you get done checking out the art hang around for Grmanfest.

Where's Santa in August?

Santa's summering right here. Not just here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, but here at Insight. And he's in Doug's office.

Doug Moss is bringing Santa to life through his astonishing illustrations for Santa's Prayer, written by Tom Roberts. I've had a sneak peak at this children's book, which  was created to benefit Children's Home Society.

The story tells how Santa works to bring back the true meaning of Christmas. What I especially like is that Santa -- who's reluctantly become a symbol of holiday materialism -- is just as distressed about the materialism as the rest of us.

Children of all ages will be delighted by the book. Check out this story that appeared last night on KELO for the inside story.

JazzFest 2009 was quite the experience!

Perfect weather and some great musicians brought in huge attendance numbers for JazzFest 2009. It's an experience we're lucky to have in our own backyard, attracting audience of all ages.

The food vendors ranged from small town to giant chain and from carnival fare to elite fine cuisine. Music fills the outdoor venue and creates the biggest party around. The music is the core of this event. But, people are drawn for the experience.

This is truly an experience for the senses. The feel of a plush grassy lawn between your toes. The smell of BBQ pork, kettle corn and funnel cakes. The taste of frozen hot chocolate, fried cheese curds and Indian tacos. The sight of people...from all walks of life, coming together for a united experience. AND, of course, the amazing music fills the air.

Kudos to Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society. We are fortunate to have this event in Sioux Falls.

Golfing with the Pros

I'm not a great golfer, but on Monday Doug and I had the opportunity to participate in a great golf tournament: the 14th Annual Hot Stuff Food Challenge, a benefit for Children's Home Society. It's a wonderful cause, and the folks at Children's Home Society do an excellent job of coordinating the huge event.

A special thanks to our team mates Jim Burma and Brady Marone from Dakota Beverage.

All in all, it was a lot of fun and we got to meet golfing greats like Jim Ahern and Don Pooley.

Doing Our Part for CSR

Long, holiday weekends are a good time to catch up on “professional reading.” One of the articles I read was on the importance of CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility from Second Wind. The article ended with this statement:

Remember that the best CSR initiatives are those supported by genuine interest within the corporate culture and real benefits to the customers and other audiences who interact with the brand.

That made me start thinking about Insight’s CSR initiatives, how we select them and the impact they’re making for our clients.

From our launch in 2003, we knew that we wanted to help non-profit organizations with creative solutions. But how to choose? We started with causes that were important to us. For Doug, supporting the arts community is vital. I wanted to help organizations that have child-centered missions. And, as we’ve added staff, our list of Corporate Social Responsibility has grown as well.

Here’s a quick look at some of the CSR campaigns we’ve worked on recently for the Arts:

Sioux Empire Community Theatre – we’re in our fourth season for SECT, promoting membership and ticket sales.
First Night Sioux Falls – a one-night event that celebrates the arts and family entertainment on New Year’s Eve. Each year we’ve been able to better define our core audience.
• Bike Rack Art – working with the Sioux Falls Visual Arts Commission to solicit art rack designs. Look for the first new racks this summer or fall.

For organizations that serve children and their families:
Little Red Stocking Campaign – a major fundraising campaign for Children’s Home Society of South Dakota.
YWCA – a re-branding effort for one of the community’s largest daycare providers.
Bike-a-Paloosa – a neighborhood event to raise funds to provide bikes for children in need.
• South Dakota Voices for Children – a video and website to help this child-advocacy group increase awareness of mental health issues.
Volunteers of America – a “day in the life” video used for fundraising throughout the state .

But as I mentioned, we also work with a number of organizations that are important to Insight staff, including
Family Connection – branding, collateral and website for this organization that serves the families of people in prison.
• Chicagoland Community Church – branding, collateral and website for this urban congregation in Chicago.

And, sometimes we work for friends in the community, such as
Help!Line Center – newsletters, Trends Report and other collateral to help this organization that touches so many other organizations in our community and our state.

These are just a few of the non-profit groups that we work with. We see this work as a win-win for us and for our clients:
• We get to work on causes we’re passionate about with the understanding that the creative will not be substantially altered.
• Clients receive top-quality creative work at no charge or at a fraction of its value.

How do we measure the success of our work? Sometimes it’s easier, like in the case of increased ticket sales for Sioux Empire Community Theatre. Or by reaching donation goals for Children’s Home Society.

Other times it’s more intangible, so we rely on the feedback of clients:

Pam Bollinger, VOA President and CEO, “Thank you for your commitment, your willingness to understand, and for making a difference that will last well into the future.”

Carol Muller, HELP!Line Center Executive Director, “Once again we've received wonderful responses to our Trends Report. It tells the HELP!Line story so well.”

To all our clients, thanks for letting us help.

Downtown Sioux Falls in 3D?

Insight was approached by Downtown Sioux Falls to create a new trailer for Moonlight Movies, which is a series of family movies shown at Fawick Park.

The trailer is more for informational purposes than entertainment value. With messages such as movie dates, event dates and rules, we had to make sure that the content was first and foremost. However, knowing that there would be a lot of children at this event, we also wanted to make sure that it was entertaining and fun.

In the brainstorming of the trailer, we kind of settled on a crazy kind of carnival idea -- a magical place where things were not quite normal, and we definitely wanted to work in elements of Downtown Sioux Falls into the piece . After a little ribbing from my Creative Director, the decision was made to create the spot entirely in 3D. We ended up using the open source software Blender 3D, I've been a fan of Blender for many years but have never really worked it into my professional workflow until recently,

Downtown Sioux Falls was great to work with and gave us total creative freedom, and this was the outcome. We hope you enjoy viewing it as much as we did creating it.
